Episode Review: Star Wars: Skeleton Crew Episode 4 - "Can't Say I Remember No At Attin"

Welcome back to the blog readers. There is no way to circumvent my feelings for this series, it is undeniable that I am loving it after three episodes so far. The performances from Jude Law, Nick Frost, and the children are all charming and endearing, the series is genuinely funny so far, the charm is there and the intrigue is intriguing (for lack of a better word). Would we be able to keep up the momentum with this episode, titled "Can't Say I Remember No At Attin," written by Christopher Ford and Jon Watts, and directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (aka Daniels)? Stick around to find out.

NOTE: I will be using spoilers for my thoughts, so DO NOT read ahead if you have not seen the episode. And as always, I will not be talking about the performances of the child actors, for obvious reasons.

I think I agree with John Campea when he says he needed this halfway point episode to determine whether this series would take an Obi-Wan Kenobi (and start off great but end bad) or a Ms. Marvel (both 2022) (and start off great and end great as well). I also could not wait to see this episode by the Daniels, who directed the fabulous (and seven-time Oscar winning) film Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). Cat's out the bag folks, this episode was awesome. An warm and endearing performance from guest Mathieu Kassovitz and a great maturity point in the story makes for the most entertaining episode of the series thus far. And I agree with Kris Carr: I will die for Neel.

Now I will admit to you guys that I did not expect Mathieu Kassovitz to show up in this series. Well, that is a bit of a half truth. Not only did I not expect him to show up, I do not even know who this guy is. It makes sense because the guy is a French actor who has primarily appeared in French films (although he did have a small role in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)). But he was so fun in his role here as General Strix. He comes off as the cool dad that your friend has that always enjoys when his kid has company and tries to be a part of the conversation in a positive way. He brings a veteran presence that not even Jude Law and Nick Frost can bring, and he really makes you care for his character and his character's caring for others. It is so warm and so delightful, and I really hope he shows up again sometime.

But the real bread and butter of this episode is absolutely the story of it. We finally get a maturation point in the story and I think it comes at just the right time. We start on the ship that the kids, SM-33 and Jod are on, and the group use Kh'ymm's coordinates to find a planet they believe to be At Attin, but it is a war-torn version of it later known as At Achrann (another one of the "Jewel" planets Kh'ymm spoke of). The kids go out and explore the planet while SM-33 keeps an eye on Jod (who steals Wim's Old Republic credits). The kids stumble on a young girl named Hayna who takes them back to her group's base of operations. Hayna introduces her father, General Strix, and befriends Neel. Strix identifies thir group as the Troiks, and the war they are currently waging against an enemy they call the Hattans. Meanwhile, Jod and SM-33 run into the Hattans.

Neel is not a fan of the violence that the Troiks are engaging in and tries to get Hayna to stop her father. She fails to, as he tells the four kids that they are going to train as soldiers. After some time, they are thrust into combat as Neel resents. Finally, Jod and SM-33 arrive to the location and reveal what they did: Jod used Wim's credits to buy the Eopies that the Hattans took from the Troiks. Hayna offers to take the group to the "Fallen Sanctum," which they remark looks very similar to their Supervisor's building.

When they arrive, they discover coordinates to every other "Jewel" planet with At Attin's destroyed, but Fern has a crisis of faith and realizes they are no closer to returning home and begins to cry. Wim tries to cheer her up by telling her she is amazing and she will figure it out, to which she actually does. She overrides SM-33's memory and gets it to admit it was responsible for the destruction of the coordinates at the instruction of his former captain, who hid treasure there. It then turns on the group when it reveals that its captain told it to kill anyone that asks about it. Neel tries to distract SM-33, but Jod is able to power off the droid as Neel faints. I love how our characters are slowly evolving and I hope that this trend continues in the final half of this series.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew gives us our most mature outing yet, and gives us some great character moments and a charming performance from Mathieu Kassovitz. Thank you all for reading, and I will see you for the next post.
