Film Review: Meg 2: The Trench

Welcome back to the blog readers. As you already know, I am a huge fan of action films. However, The Meg (2018) was not one of them, ranking as my 5th worst film of that year. Would a sequel, which I did not ask for in any human way, somehow make the first one look like a fluke? Stick around to find out; and I can promise you right now, this is going to be a fun one.

Meg 2: The Trench was directed by Ben Wheatley from a screenplay and story by Dean Georgaris and Jon & Erich Hoeber. The film stars Jason Statham, Wu Jing, Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, Skyler Samuels, and Cliff Curtis. In the film, set five years after the events of the first film, the crew must do battle with three Megalodons while also being pitted against a rival mining company.

NOTE: I cannot promise I will keep this review spoiler-free, so DO NOT read this review if you have not seen this film. Or stay for the sheer insanity. I don't care with this one.

Like I had said, I really do like action films, but not if they suck, like the first one. Bad acting and mid special effects led to a not great time at the movies. I was hoping for a miracle here, but you guys better buckle up. So I feel confident telling you guys that Meg 2: The Trench is not only the most unnecessary film ever, it is also the worst film I have ever seen. And no, I am not kidding or exaggerating. Everything about this film is just next-level terrible. The acting is horrible, the writing is abysmal, and the action is lazy and ridiculous. We are in for a damn ride on this one.

Let us start with the acting. Oh boy, the acting is pretty bad. I have had an opinion that some would see as controversial. Jason Statham does not have any charisma outside of the Fast & Furious (2001-present) series. This is no different. Statham literally looks like he is bored in every scene he is in, and it reflects in every other actor. Cliff Curtis was literally in Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) eight months ago, and now he is literally acting like a child in this garbage. Wu Jing is another actor who literally acts like a child and his presence in the film could not be more out of place. I am so sorry, but I did not care about the kid (played by Sophia Cai) at all, and everyone else was just there to be there. It is pretty bad when the dog (that was only there for like 3 scenes) was the best actor in the film. Just terrible all around.

Next we have to talk about the abysmal writing. I have never in my life seen a lazier script than this. Some of the choices for dialogue and story directions completely baffled me. The little dinosaur creatures that were shown in passing all of a sudden showed up at the end on the island. There was no reason at all for these creatures to come back when they were only shown in the prologue. And on top of that madness, why the actual fuck did there have to be a whole ass giant squid also? The squid served no narrative purpose, other than another adversarial threat to our "heroes." And the dialogue was cringy as fuck. I was throwing my hands up and sighing after the delivery of every other line. It was just terrible.

And the action is dull as hell too. I did not give a single, solitary shit about any of the action. To me, the action felt lazy and uninspired. And again, that could tie into the writing. How is Jason Statham able to hold off a fucking Megalodon with his damn boot? How can he act like a jet ski is a car and do tricks with it? How are people not killed while performing death-defying action? This is the heaviest plot armor I have ever seen, and it is really sad that they treat Statham like a damn superhero in this franchise. Absolutely illogical and completely nonsensical.

Sorry guys, but I cannot talk about this film anymore because of how terrible it was. So with that being said, in conclusion, Meg 2: The Trench completely dumbs down an already poor film with worse acting, writing, and action to make the worst film I have ever seen. Thank you all for reading, and I will see you for the next one. And for your own sake, do not see this film.
